The South Bay Area Research Institute (SBARI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization focused on research, education, and community engagement in sustainability, technology, AI ethics, and cybersecurity awareness, with a special emphasis on empowering youth to drive positive change.

Our youth programs provide students with hands-on experiences in the most exciting and rapidly evolving fields, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, Internet of Things (IoT), and Sustainability.

Ongoing Youth Programs

SBARI’s STEM Internship Program allows students to engage in real-world projects alongside experts in AI, IoT, and cybersecurity. As an intern, you’ll:

  • Contribute to ongoing projects that focus on innovative technologies, smart systems, and environmental sustainability.
  • Build skills in programming, data analysis, data and network security, and advanced systems development.
  • Gain professional experience that will set you apart as you pursue a future in STEM.

Eligibility: High school juniors, seniors, and undergraduates
Duration: Year-round, with flexible scheduling

Our STEM Mentoring Program connects students with professionals who guide them through research projects and career development in fields like AI, IoT, and cybersecurity. Mentoring includes:

  • Personalized projects focused on cutting-edge technologies.
  • Guidance on navigating the academic and professional STEM pathways.
  • Access to SBARI’s professional network for future career opportunities.

Eligibility: Middle school, high school, and undergraduate students
Duration: Flexible, based on student needs.

SBARI’s STEM Labs offer immersive, hands-on experiences for students interested in the latest technology. Explore fields like:

  • AI & Machine Learning: Learn to build intelligent systems and solve real-world problems with machine learning techniques.
  • Cybersecurity: Understand the importance of data security and practice defending systems against cyber attacks.
  • IoT Labs: Design and build smart devices that interact with the environment and improve daily life.
  • Sustainability Workshops: Work on technologies that promote environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and conservation.


Eligibility: Middle school, high school, and undergraduate students
Availability: Year-round, with seasonal workshops.

Students in SBARI’s Research & Development Program take on complex challenges in fields like AI, IoT, and sustainable technologies. You will:

  • Collaborate on research that aims to solve real-world problems, such as smart city innovations, data privacy, and sustainable energy.
  • Conduct experiments, build prototypes, and present your work at SBARI conferences.
  • Develop skills in research methodology, problem-solving, and innovation.


Eligibility: High school and undergraduate students
Program Duration: Ongoing, flexible scheduling.

SBARI’s Youth Leadership Program helps young leaders develop the skills to drive positive change in their communities through technology and innovation. Participants will:

  • Lead community-based projects focused on implementing sustainable tech solutions.
  • Organize events, manage teams, and present initiatives on AI, IoT, and cybersecurity for social impact.
  • Gain leadership skills, experience in project management, and networking opportunities.


Eligibility: High school and undergraduate students
Duration: Six months, with the possibility of extension.
